Alex Eala tops Arianne Hartono anew to start Guadalajara Open bid

MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala jumpstarted her Guadalajara Open campaign with a rousing 6-2, 6-2 win over Arianne Hartono of the Netherlands on Wednesday morning (Philippine time) in Mexico.

Eala advanced to the round of 16 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 125 tour after reasserting her dominance over Hartono, whom she has now beaten for the fourth straight time.

The 20-year-old Filipino zoomed to a 3-1 start and never looked back to take the opening set.

Tied at 2-2 in the second, Eala won four straight games to finish the match in an hour and nine minutes.

Eala battles a 39-year-old qualifier Varvara Lepchenko of the United States in the second round on Thursday.

Lepchenko, the world No. 122, swept Maddison Inglis, 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32.

The world No. 75 Eala is coming off a historic US Open, where she become the first Filipino to win a match at a Grand Slam singles tournament in the Open era after stunning world No. 14 Clara Tauson of Denmark, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11).

However, her run ended in the second round after falling to Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, 6-4, 6-3.

The Rafa Nadal Academy graduate just returned from a shoulder injury and will compete in the Sao Paulo Open from September 8 to 14 in Brazil.
